United States President Donald Trump has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as his decisive leadership in steering Nigeria through complex security challenges, while reaffirming Washington’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
In a letter addressed to President Tinubu, Trump praised the Nigerian leader’s determination to tackle insecurity, particularly attacks affecting vulnerable communities, and expressed solidarity with Nigeria’s efforts to defeat terrorist groups.
"It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against these terrorists," Trump stated, emphasizing the United States' readiness to continue supporting Nigeria's counter-terrorism operations.
The letter highlighted the growing security partnership between both countries, revealing that Nigeria and the United States have established a Joint Working Group led by the National Security Advisers of both nations. The framework is expected to enhance intelligence sharing, personnel training, and coordinated operations against terrorist networks.
Trump also referenced a significant counter-terrorism operation carried out on May 16 in the Lake Chad region, where coordinated efforts reportedly led to the elimination of ISIS leader Abubakar Al-Minoki and several senior commanders. He described the operation as a major success in the ongoing campaign against terrorism.
The U.S. President further noted that the visit of Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, to Abuja underscores Washington's determination to deepen cooperation with Nigeria not only in security but also in other strategic sectors.
According to the letter, the U.S.-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap now serves as the guiding framework for expanding defence collaboration between both countries. Trump disclosed that the United States has deployed Special Operations Forces to support Nigeria through specialised training, intelligence assistance, and operational cooperation.
He explained that the support is aimed at protecting Nigerian citizens, particularly religious communities that have come under attack, while stressing that both countries remain united in their resolve to combat terrorism "in all its forms."
Trump concluded by expressing appreciation for President Tinubu's leadership and reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining close engagement with Nigeria throughout his presidency, signalling the prospect of an expanded strategic partnership between the two countries.
The correspondence reflects the growing importance of U.S.-Nigeria relations in addressing regional security challenges and advancing joint efforts to promote peace, stability, and the protection of lives across the country.
