Tinubu Approves Sweeping NYSC Reforms, Introduces Civilian Operational Leadership and Skills-Focused Service*
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing far-reaching changes aimed at modernising the Scheme, strengthening corps members' safety, and enhancing youth development.
A key feature of the reforms is the introduction of civilian operational leadership for the NYSC, while the military will continue to provide security support for corps members across the country.
To facilitate the implementation of the reforms, President Tinubu directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, alongside the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to incorporate the newly approved measures for immediate execution.
The approved reforms introduce a technology-driven call-up process designed to improve efficiency and transparency, while corps members will now be deployed using a risk-sensitive framework to enhance their safety and security.
The orientation course will also be redesigned into a six-week programme with greater emphasis on leadership development, entrepreneurship, digital skills acquisition, and specialised career pathways to better prepare participants for the modern workforce.
In addition, primary assignments will be aligned with corps members' academic qualifications, professional competencies, and career aspirations to maximise their contributions and improve post-service employability.
The reforms further provide for improved governance through civilian operational management, while retaining military involvement in safeguarding corps members. NYSC orientation camps will also be upgraded under a national grading and certification system aimed at improving infrastructure and service standards nationwide.
Another notable change is the replacement of the traditional Passing Out Parade with a formal graduation ceremony, alongside the introduction of a redesigned NYSC uniform intended to project professionalism, unity, and national pride.
The reforms represent one of the most significant overhauls of the NYSC since its establishment, reflecting the Federal Government's commitment to repositioning the Scheme as a more relevant, secure, and development-oriented platform for Nigerian youths.
