President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on BRICS nations to support urgent reforms of global governance structures and international financial institutions to make them more representative, equitable and responsive to contemporary realities.
Tinubu made the call at the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, where Vice President Kashim Shettima represented him.
The President said Nigeria supports reform of the United Nations Security Council and the international financial system, stressing that BRICS should move from dialogue and commitments to practical outcomes in trade, investment, technology transfer and development.
He also positioned Nigeria as a gateway to Africa’s expanding market under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), urging BRICS investors to explore opportunities in the country.
Tinubu called for deeper BRICS cooperation with Nigeria in **artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, fintech, telecommunications, cybersecurity, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing.
He further highlighted Nigeria’s youthful population and innovation potential, while seeking partnerships in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, healthcare, education and industrialisation.
On climate action, the President advocated affordable climate finance, technology transfer and cooperation in renewable energy, clean technologies, climate-smart agriculture and responsible critical-mineral development.
Tinubu said Nigeria was ready to contribute to a BRICS partnership that creates jobs, expands trade, transfers technology and strengthens the productive capacity of member and partner countries.
Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said BRICS’ strength lies in its diversity and cooperation, stressing the importance of inclusive development, sustainability and greater participation of entrepreneurs, farmers, researchers, women and young people.
