The Professional Women Accountants in Nigeria (PROWAN), FCT1 Chapter, has called on women in the accounting profession to embrace continuous learning, technological innovation, ethical leadership and professional excellence as they strive to make greater impact in Nig
eria’s financial system.
The call was made at the 2026 PROWAN FCT1 Capacity Building Seminar, held at the Auditorium of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Abuja, with the theme: “From Compliance to Impact: How Women Can Advance Transparency and Accountability in Nigeria’s Financial System.”
The one-day seminar brought together professional women accountants, leaders, resource persons and other stakeholders for knowledge sharing, professional development and networking.
In her welcome address, the PROWAN FCT1 Chapter Coordinator, Chief Route Commander Princess Ngozi Chukwujekwu, FCNA, expressed appreciation to participants and distinguished guests for their presence, describing the seminar as an important platform for professional growth, excellence and relevance.
She stressed that professional women accountants have a responsibility to remain ahead technologically, intellectually and ethically, particularly in an era of rapid technological advancement and changing regulations.
According to her, the theme of the seminar was “both timely and strategic,” as it challenged women accountants to move beyond mere compliance and position themselves as key drivers of transparency, accountability and innovation in Nigeria’s financial system.
Princess Chukwujekwu urged participants to take full advantage of the learning opportunities provided by the seminar, actively participate in the sessions, ask questions and build professional networks.
“Let us learn, unlearn, and relearn together,” she charged, reminding participants that they are ambassadors of the accounting profession and must continue to uphold its integrity and reputation.
She also commended the, planning committee, members and resource persons whose contributions made the seminar possible.
In a goodwill message and charge to participants, the National PROWAN Chairperson, Dr. Mrs. Rakiya Opemi Yusuf, FCNA, urged women accountants to sustain the momentum of professional development and translate knowledge acquired into measurable impact in their workplaces, businesses and communities.
Dr. Yusuf encouraged women to see themselves not merely as professionals responsible for financial compliance, but as strategic leaders capable of influencing transparency, accountability and sound financial management across both the public and private sectors.
She advised members to continually upgrade their skills, particularly in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, accounting technologies, taxation and digital transformation.
The National Chairperson further encouraged women to support one another, mentor younger professionals and create opportunities for other women to grow and succeed.
She stressed the need for professional women to maintain high ethical standards, noting that competence must always be matched with integrity, accountability and a strong sense of responsibility.
She also urged participants to remain courageous and innovative in their careers, reminding them that the growing presence of women in the accounting profession provides an opportunity to influence positive change in Nigeria's financial system.
The technical sessions addressed a broad range of contemporary issues.
Dr. Akintunde Ogunsola facilitated a session on Accounting Tools, Software Application Packages and Artificial Intelligence (AI), exposing participants to modern technologies and their growing application in accounting and professional practice.
Dr. Ajakpomevi Uziewe delivered a presentation on New Tax Laws and Tax Reforms, examining their implications for individuals, businesses and accounting professionals and highlighting the role of accountants in ensuring compliance.
The programme also featured a session on Women’s Health and Reproductive Health, facilitated by Dr. Esther Emeka-Irem, Consultant Gynaecologist, with emphasis on preventive care, wellness and health issues affecting women at different stages of life.
A further presentation on Leadership was delivered by Mr. Wahab Shina Omoniyi FCNA, focusing on leadership development and the need for professionals to cultivate the capacity to influence positive outcomes within their organisations and society.
The presentations were followed by an interactive question-and-answer session, while participants also used the occasion to network and exchange professional experiences.
The seminar ended with closing remarks, a vote of thanks, presentation of certificates and a group photograph.
The event reaffirmed PROWAN FCT1’s commitment to continuous professional development and its broader objective of empowering women accountants to move from simply meeting compliance requirements to creating lasting impact through leadership, innovation, transparency and accountability.
