CITN Marks Maiden National Tax Awareness Day with Strategic Stakeholder Engagement in Abuja

Abuja, June 2026 – The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) commemorated its maiden National Tax Awareness Day with strategic advocacy and sensitisation visits to key institutions in Nigeria’s tax administration system, reaffirming its commitment to tax education, voluntary compliance, and national development.

The nationwide campaign, held under the theme Tax Awareness for National Growth: Reform, Compliance and Shared Prosperity, mobilised tax professionals across the Institute’s District Societies to promote taxpayer education and support ongoing tax reforms.

The Abuja delegation led by the CITN President, Mr Innocent Ohagwa first visited the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), where discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between tax professionals and revenue authorities, enhancing taxpayer education, and improving voluntary tax compliance.

Welcoming the delegation, the Executive Chairman of the NRS commended CITN for institutionalising the National Tax Awareness Day, describing it as a landmark initiative that will deepen public understanding of taxation and strengthen Nigeria’s tax system.

He noted that the event coincided with one year of the country’s landmark tax reform legislation, which has ushered in a more transparent, technology-driven, efficient, and service-oriented tax administration.

According to him, tax awareness is the foundation of voluntary compliance, while voluntary compliance remains essential for sustainable revenue generation, national growth, and shared prosperity. He added that beyond enforcement, taxpayer education, stakeholder engagement, transparency, and improved service delivery are critical to building public trust.

The NRS Chairman also highlighted ongoing digital transformation and automation initiatives aimed at simplifying tax compliance and improving taxpayer experience. He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to working closely with CITN in promoting ethical tax practice, professional development, and nationwide taxpayer enlightenment.

The CITN delegation later visited the Federal Ministry of Finance for further discussions on supporting government revenue generation efforts before proceeding to the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), Zone 5, Abuja, where consultations centred on tax policy implementation, stakeholder collaboration, and expanding taxpayer awareness.

Earlier, CITN members visited Wuse Market, where they sensitised traders and business owners on the importance of tax compliance, proper record-keeping, and the role of taxation in funding infrastructure and national development. Educational materials were distributed to improve public understanding of taxpayers’ rights and obligations.

The Institute stated that the maiden National Tax Awareness Day forms part of its long-term strategy to deepen tax consciousness, bridge knowledge gaps, and foster a culture of voluntary tax compliance across Nigeria.

Participants at the various engagements described the initiative as a timely intervention that complements the Federal Government’s tax reform agenda and will contribute to strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s tax administration.
