The ongoing 56th Annual Accountants’ Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) is bringing governance, professional ethics and public accountability into focus, with prominent Nigerian public figures joining discussions on the role of accountants in strengthening public institutions and promoting responsible leadership.
Senator Isah Hamma Misau, FCA, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, and Omoyele “Yele” Sowore, politician, human rights activist and journalist, are participating as paper discussants at a session titled “Accountants in Politics: Strengthening Governance and Public Accountability.”
The session is expected to examine how the accountancy profession can contribute to ethical leadership, transparency, accountability and improved governance in Nigeria.
The participation of the two discussants underscores the importance of constructive engagement between professional accountants, political leaders and other stakeholders in addressing governance challenges and strengthening public institutions.
As custodians of financial integrity and accountability, accountants have a significant role to play in promoting prudent management of public resources, supporting evidence-based policymaking and ensuring transparency in the conduct of government business.
The discussions also provide an opportunity to explore how professional standards and ethical principles can be integrated into political leadership and public administration to enhance citizens’ confidence in government institutions.
With the theme of accountability central to the session, the conference reinforces the need for stronger collaboration between the accountancy profession and the political establishment in advancing Nigeria’s economic development and democratic governance.
The 56th Annual Accountants’ Conference continues to serve as a platform for professional dialogue, knowledge exchange and the development of practical solutions to Nigeria’s economic and institutional challenges.
ABF News will continue to highlight key discussions and contributions from the conference as stakeholders deliberate on the future of the accountancy profession and its role in national development.
